What to see in Seville in one day without trying to see it all

An itinerary for independent travellers: what to prioritise, in what order and what to drop if time is short.

In one day, focus on the Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Santa Cruz quarter, and keep the afternoon for Plaza de España or the river and Triana. Adjust the order to the tickets you get, the season and the heat.

The morning, step by step

Start with the Alcázar
If you get a first-slot ticket, you will enjoy the courtyards with fewer people and cooler air. Take your time in Pedro I’s palace and leave at least half an hour for the gardens. Book in advance on the official website.
Continue to the Cathedral
It is a few steps away. The Cathedral is huge: rather than covering it all, focus on the central nave, the high altarpiece, the Columbus monument and the Courtyard of the Orange Trees. Allow extra time if you climb the Giralda. Tickets on the official website.
Finish in Santa Cruz
Before lunch, wander the quarter: Plaza de Santa Cruz, Callejón del Agua, Plaza de Doña Elvira. It is the best antidote to interior overload.

Where and when to take a break

Seville eats late: most kitchens open from 13:30 and the usual lunchtime is between 14:00 and 15:30. Go with it, and do not try to squeeze a monument in between 14:00 and 17:00 in summer.

Moving a few streets away from the Cathedral–Alcázar axis usually means better value and less hurry.

The afternoon: two alternatives

Choose according to what you feel like after a morning of monuments.

Option A: Plaza de España and María Luisa Park
Architecture, ceramics and open space. The square has little shade, so it works best late in the day. The park next door offers fountains and trees to rest under. Good with children or if you are curious about the Seville of the 1929 Exposition.
Option B: the river and Triana
Walk down to the Torre del Oro, follow the Guadalquivir and cross Triana Bridge at sunset. On the other side, the market, Calle Betis and the ceramics streets show a more everyday Seville. Good if you prefer atmosphere and views.

What to drop if you arrive late

Arriving at middayChoose one of the two great interiors (Alcázar or Cathedral), not both, and spend the afternoon in Santa Cruz and Plaza de España.
Only the afternoonStay outdoors: the Cathedral and Giralda from outside, Santa Cruz, the river and Triana at sunset.
No ticketsWalk around the outside of the monuments and give more time to neighbourhoods and squares. Seville can be understood from the street too.

Variants: children, rain or intense heat

With childrenThe Alcázar and its gardens in the morning, María Luisa Park in the afternoon. Fewer interiors, more breaks. See also our family tours.
