Why Triana

For centuries Triana was the other bank. Until the mid-nineteenth century only a bridge of boats joined it to Seville, and that distance created a neighbourhood with a character of its own: sailors, potters, blacksmiths and Roma families who lived in communal courtyards and worked in the forges.

Much of the city’s flamenco memory grew out of that mix. The soleá has a Triana style, and streets such as the old Cava — today Pagés del Corro — are remembered for the singing once heard there. In Triana flamenco is not a stage set: it is part of the neighbourhood’s history, like ceramics or devotion to its brotherhoods.

  1. Flamenco and its neighbourhood

    Before listening to flamenco it helps to know what you are hearing. Along the way María explains where the songs come from, what compás is, why clapping follows rules, and how flamenco moved from courtyards and forges to the stage.

  2. Ceramics and craft

    For centuries Triana was Seville’s great potters’ quarter. The tiles on the façades, the street signs and the ceramic altarpieces on corners are the visible trace of that craft, still kept alive by a few workshops and explained in the old Santa Ana ceramics works, now an interpretation centre.

  3. The culture of tapas

    Tapas are not a small dinner: they are a way of being together. You order at the bar, share, move from one bar to the next and try whatever the house recommends that day. Between stops, the route explains what people eat in Seville and why, unhurriedly and in conversation.

What does the tour include?

A guided walk through Triana about flamenco, ceramics and tapas culture, with stops at neighbourhood bars and a closing flamenco performance in an intimate space. Included food, drinks and tickets are set out in María’s proposal.

Is it a show in a tablao?

No. The route is mainly a guided walk through the neighbourhood. The closing flamenco takes place in a small space for a few people, not in a large tablao. If you only want to see a show, see intimate flamenco in Triana.

Can it be adapted for vegetarians or allergies?

Tell María when you enquire and the stops will be chosen accordingly.

How much does a private guided tour of Seville cost?
