Cádiz claims, with good reason, to be one of the oldest cities in Western Europe: the Phoenicians founded it as Gadir. Almost entirely surrounded by the sea, it has always lived looking outwards.
It is about 120 km (75 miles) from Seville, which allows a full day with time to walk the old town, gaze out over the Atlantic and enjoy an unhurried lunch.

An old town between walls and sea
Straight streets that end at the ocean, open squares and the Cathedral with its golden dome facing the Campo del Sur. The city is best understood by walking its edge.
The merchants’ towers
In the 18th century, when the monopoly on trade with the Americas moved from Seville to Cádiz, merchants built lookout towers to watch for their ships. Torre Tavira is the best known.
The city of «La Pepa»
During the war against Napoleon, Cádiz withstood the siege, and in the oratory of San Felipe Neri the Cortes met and approved the Constitution of 1812, Spain’s first.
Its bond with the sea
From La Caleta to the Castle of San Sebastián, the sea is not a backdrop: it is the city’s reason for being, its defence and its economy.
